Wind (onshore and offshore)
NRG owns three wind farms in Texas – Elbow Creek, Langford and Sherbino.
- The 120 MW Elbow Creek Wind Farm in Howard County near Big Spring, Texas, consists of 53 Siemens wind turbine generators, each able to generate up to 2.3 MW of power.
- The 150 MW Langford Wind Farm 25 miles south of San Angelo , Texas , uses 100 General Electric 1.5 MW wind turbine generators on approximately 35,000 acres of land.
NRG, along with BP Wind Energy, also developed the 150 MW Sherbino I Wind Farm in Pecos County , Texas . The Sherbino I Wind Farm consists of 50 Vestas wind turbine generators, each capable of generating up to 3 MW of power. The wind farm, which BP operates and dispatches, is located approximately 40 miles east of Fort Stockton on a mesa spanning approximately 10,000 acres and rising approximately 3,000 feet above sea level.
In 2009, NRG entered the offshore wind market with the acquisition of Bluewater Wind, creating NRG Bluewater to develop offshore wind projects in the northeast. NRG Bluewater is currently working on projects in Delaware , Maryland and New Jersey in advanced stages of development. NRG Bluewater has a 25-year, 200 megawatt power purchase agreement (PPA) with Delmarva Power & Light Company, the first PPA for offshore wind in the U.S. In New Jersey , the company is one of three preferred developers awarded a $4 million rebate from the state to build a meteorological tower, which collects wind data, for offshore projects. In December 2009, NRG Bluewater added a second PPA from the State of Maryland to provide up to 55 megawatts of wind generation.
